There are a lot of dancing related activities and institutions, but there is a lack of professional dancing studios in the southern region of Portugal. With professional equipment and professional dancing teachers, “Emotion Dance Academy” is the newest community space in Algarve that offers the population professional dancing classes with  a variety of styles included.

The brand circles hold up to important values such as movement, power, progress, and union. For a unique personality, the word “emotion” was designed just by using circles, reflecting movement, energy and simplicity.

THE CLIENT

This project was done in a internship environment at Kimahera, a professional recording studio in Algarve owned by Pedro Pinto. Together with Laura Abel, his girfriend, they are opening Emotion Dance Academy and I had the responsibility of preparing the visual identity, together with its applications. Laura Abel, a professional dancer, is the main face of the academy, focusing in Contemporary and Ballet, Laura is also a teacher of both classes for all age groups.

RESEARCH & CONCEPT

After a competitors analysis of the schools available in the region and within a wider specter of the best schools in the country, Emotion Dance Academy establishes a premium quality service with a target audience that goes from kids of 4 years in the initial dancing steps, to teenagers and adults.

Emotions are a response from our body to external stimulations that englobe personal and comportamental experiences, they are responsible to give us pleasure or make us feel unhappy. The research started by understanding the origins of dance. It was used by ancient tribes as a form of expression to celebrate and commemorate, where they would gather as a circle around the fire.

Emotion Dance Academy is then movement, progress and union. The circle was defined as the base visual for the brand, who want’s to offer the local people a new opportunity through a welcoming place where it is possible to learn different dancing styles, without leaving aside the emotions brought by learning, expression and body moves.

THE SPACE

Together with the visual identity, the exterior and interior vinil applications were also part of the project.

Even though the store is away from the street, there was the necessity of privacy so people don’t stare from outside, what leaded to the decision of covering partially and totally the windows. However, keeping luminosity was also a key aspect because the store is surrounded by buildings. After deep research and discussions with print-shops, the vinil applied doesn’t let our eyes see trough, but contains translucid properties which don’t stop the light totally from going inside.


For the exterior facade a total of 7 different windows and doors were designed, 4 for the front store, and 3 side windows with different height sizes above the 3 meters.

In the inside the objective was to keep it simple, you can find a logo neon sign in the main wall as you enter, signage for the different studios, dressing room and toilets details.
